Colors: The Power of PaintNow’s your chance to let your true colors shine through. Don’t underestimate the power of paint. Color can affect the mood, tone – even shape – of a room.
Don’t be shy. Bold colors and techniques are a fast, easy way to get that dramatic look you’ve always wanted. Here’s 3 of the latest techniques sure to wet your palette.
Crackling
To achieve an aged, heirloom look full of hairline cracks, use crackling. Crackling works best on wood and involves three basic steps. Apply a base color which will appear beneath crack lines. Let it dry and apply a crackling medium. Paint over with a top color lighter than your base color and watch the crackling begin!
Ragging
It’s fun. It’s fashionable. And it’s really, really easy. Ragging (also known as sponging) gives walls depth and warmth with a subtle, random pattern. After your base coat dries, apply another coat consisting of half paint and half glazing liquid. Wad up a rag, press and lift randomly and – voilà – a masterpiece will appear!
Stippling
For an amazingly rich texture, try stippling. Find some old, worn brushes – the shabbier, the better – and dip only the top of the bristles in your paint. Blot on a paper towel to remove any excess paint and apply to the wall in an aggressive, pouncing motion. The result is fuzzy and fun – sure to bring out your home’s playing side.

Hue to the Rescue | |
| Problem | Solution |
| Cramped Spaces | Everyone has small rooms that they wish looked larger. Thick, vertical stripes on the walls, curtains, and pillows will make your room look larger. |
| Long Corridors | For those long hallways that seem to never end, try painting the back wall a solid color. You’ll find the effect short n’ sweet. |
